La difrencia entre un baño de iodo y un baño de lugol es la forma en la que el iodo esta presente. En un baño de Iodo el iodo se encuentra reducido como ion ioduro (I-) generalmente presente como ioduro de potasio (IK). El iodo elemental o puro (I2) es altamente oxidante ya que se reduce con facilidad y es muy insoluble. El lugol lo mezcla con ioduro de potasio para poder mantener el I2 disuelto. El principio "activo" del tratamiento con lugol es la oxidacion de patogenos mediante I2, en el proceso este se transforma en I-.

El betadine es povidona iodada, no es yoduro de potasio. Es similar al lugol solo que en vez de usar yoduro de potasio para mantener Iodo molecular en solucion usa un compuesto organico polimerico llamado povidona.
